Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that (A)God has made him (B)both Lord and Christ, this Jesus (C)whom you crucified.”

37 Now when (D)they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, (E)what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, (F)“Repent and (G)be baptized every one of you (H)in the name of Jesus Christ (I)for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive (J)the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For (K)the promise is for you and (L)for your children and for all (M)who are far off, everyone (N)whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, (O)“Save yourselves from this (P)crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and (Q)there were added that day about three thousand souls.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 And (R)they devoted themselves to the apostles' (S)teaching and the (T)fellowship, to (U)the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe[a] came upon every soul, and (V)many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and (W)had all things in common. 45 And (X)they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, (Y)attending the temple (Z)together and (AA)breaking bread in their homes, they received their food (AB)with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and (AC)having favor with all the people. And the Lord (AD)added to their number (AE)day by day those who (AF)were being saved.

Israel's Only Savior

43 But now thus says the Lord,
(A)he who created you, O Jacob,
    he who formed you, O Israel:
(B)“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
    (C)I have called you by name, you are mine.
(D)When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
(E)when you walk through fire (F)you shall not be burned,
    and the flame shall not consume you.
For (G)I am the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
(H)I give Egypt as your ransom,
    Cush and (I)Seba in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my eyes,
    and honored, and I love you,
I give men in return for you,
    peoples in exchange for your life.
(J)Fear not, for I am with you;
    (K)I will bring your offspring from the east,
    and from the west I will gather you.
I will say to the north, Give up,
    and to the south, Do not withhold;
bring (L)my sons from afar
    and (M)my daughters from the end of the earth,
everyone who is called by my name,
    whom I created for my glory,
    whom I formed and made.”

Bring out (N)the people who are blind, yet have eyes,
    who are deaf, yet have ears!
(O)All the nations gather together,
    and the peoples assemble.
Who among them can declare this,
    and show us the former things?
Let them bring their witnesses to prove them right,
    and let them hear and say, It is true.
10 (P)“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord,
    “and (Q)my servant whom I have chosen,
that you may know and believe me
    and understand that I am he.
(R)Before me no god was formed,
    nor shall there be any after me.
11 (S)I, I am the Lord,
    and besides me there is no savior.
12 I declared and saved and proclaimed,
    when there was no strange god among you;
    and (T)you are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and I am God.

12 What shall I (C)render to the Lord
    for all his benefits to me?
13 I will lift up (D)the cup of salvation
    and (E)call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will (F)pay my vows to the Lord

15 (G)Precious in the sight of the Lord

16 O Lord, I am your (I)servant;

Called to Be Holy

13 Therefore, (A)preparing your minds for action,[a] and (B)being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, (C)do not be conformed to the passions (D)of your former ignorance, 15 but (E)as he who called you is holy, you also be holy (F)in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, (G)“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you (H)call on him as Father who (I)judges (J)impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves (K)with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you (L)were ransomed from (M)the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but (N)with the precious blood of Christ, like that of (O)a lamb (P)without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but (Q)was made manifest (R)in the last times for the sake of you 21 (S)who through him are believers in God, (T)who raised him from the dead and (U)gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for (V)a sincere brotherly love, (W)love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 (X)since you have been born again, (Y)not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through (Z)the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

(AA)“All flesh is like grass
    and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,
25 (AB)but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word (AC)is the good news that was preached to you.

  1. 1 Peter 1:13 Greek girding up the loins of your mind

On the Road to Emmaus

13 That very day (A)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 (B)But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was (C)a prophet (D)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and (E)how our chief priests and (F)rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was (G)the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now (H)the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. (I)They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and (J)when they did not find his body, they came back saying that (K)they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 (L)Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (M)Was it not necessary that (N)the Christ should suffer these things and enter into (O)his glory?” 27 And (P)beginning with (Q)Moses and (R)all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. (S)He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and (T)the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and (U)blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 (V)And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And (W)he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, (X)“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he (Y)opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they (Z)found the eleven and (AA)those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and (AB)has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and (AC)how he was known to them in (AD)the breaking of the bread.
